A Musical Witness To History

  • Sudlow Intermediate School 1414 East Locust Street Davenport, IA, 52803 United States (map)

The Violins of Hope: A Musical Witness to History program brings the purpose and impact of the project directly into classrooms throughout the Quad Cities region. Each visit features live performances by Quad City Symphony Orchestra musicians alongside a Holocaust Education Committee host who co-presents, guides discussion, and actively engages students.

Through guided storytelling, musical demonstrations, and interactive dialogue, students learn about the history of the instruments and the people who once played them. These restored violins and stringed instruments are connected to individuals whose lives were shaped by the events of the Holocaust and World War II, representing stories of courage, loss, resilience, and the enduring power of music.

The host works in tandem with the musicians to encourage student questions, promote reflection, and explore themes of memory, humanity, and why Holocaust education remains essential today. Age-appropriate and meaningful, these sessions offer students a personal and accessible point of connection to history.
